Charles A. Waldron

M, #523, b. about 1820, d. 28 January 1892
Last Edited=11 October 2022
Charles A. Waldron was born a 1820 in Orange County, New York.1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 He married Sarah Jane Miller, daughter of Benjamin Franklin Miller and Annatje Van Wormer, b 1844. Charles A. Waldron died on 28 Jan 1892 in Kings County Hospital (451 Clarkson Ave), Flatbush, Kings County, New York.9,10,11,12 The obituary states

WALDRON -- On January 28, CHARLES WALDRON, in the 76th year of his age. Funeral Sunday, at 2 P. M., from the residence of his son, Jerome st, first house south of New Lots road, Twenty-sixth Ward.. Evergreen Cemetery records indicate the funeral was handled by S. Bennett & Son.13
He was interred on 31 Jan 1892 at The Evergreens Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, Mt. Pisgah, Lot No. 1004.7,14
He and Sarah Jane Millermay haved lived in Ward 9, New York City, New York County, New York, in 1840. The 9th Ward encompassed an area on the lower east side bounded by the Hudson River, W 14th Street, 6th Avenue and a few streets south of Christopher Street.

That census lists: Males 20-29: 1; Females Under 5: 1; Females 20-29: 1; Persons Employed in Manufacture and Trade: 1. That would put Charles and Sarah as born between 1811 and 1820. It also lists a female born between 1835 and 1839. I have no record of such a daughter; perhaps she did not survive through 1850, when the other children were listed.15 Charles A. Waldron lived at 246 West Street, New York City, New York County, New York, (Occupation ice) in 1847.16 He and Sarah Jane Miller lived in the 8th Ward, District 1, New York City, New York County, New York, in 1850. He worked as an ice dealer. His family lived right next door to the Joseph Daniell family. Joseph was also an ice dealer. So it looks like they worked together in some way.17

In 1850 Charles and his family lived in the same building as Sarah's mother, Nancy Miller and her son Joseph Miller and his family.18 The 1850 census listed his occupation as ice dealer. This coincides with the New York City Directories for 1847 through 1852. (He doesn't appear in the directories prior to 1847.) The 1860 census listed his occupation as "Pump & Block", while the New York City directories of 1860 and 1861 list his occupation as pumpmaker and "blocks", respectively. The 1870 census listed his occupation as truck driver, and in 1880 the census listed his occupation as blockmaker. He is again listed as a blockmaker in the Brooklyn City Directories from 1871 through 1882. The occupation of "pump and block" is associated with the sailing industry. He was involved in making wooden bilge pumps and the block & tackle used in sailing ships.18,19

When George F. Daniell was sworn in as a citizen on 28 Aug 1850 at the Common Pleas Court, New York City, New York, Charles was a witness for him.20 He and Sarah Jane Miller lived in the 11th Ward, 4th District, New York City, New York County, New York, in 1855. His occupation was "pumps and blocks."21 Charles A. Waldron and Sarah Jane Miller lived in the 19th Ward, District 1, New York City, New York, in 1860. His occupation was listed as Pump & Block, and his personal property was valued at $400.22 Charles A. Waldron lived at 6 Beekman Street, New York City, New York, in the 2nd Ward, 4th Congressional District in 1863. His occupation was blockmaker at the Navy Yard.23 He was employed in 1863 at the Navy Yard, New York City, New York.24 He and Sarah Jane Miller lived in Ward 13 District 5, New York City, New York County, New York, in 1870. He worked as a truck driver, and his personal property was valued at $200.
The 1870 census indicates that Charles' father and mother were both foreign born. This appears to be an error. The 1880 census indicates that both his father and his mother were born in NY.25 Charles A. Waldron lived at 202 Prospect Street, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, fr 1871 - 1873.26 He and Joseph D. Waldron lived at 202 Prospect Street, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, in 1873.27 Charles A. Waldron resided with Charles A. Waldron Jr. and Sarah Jane Miller at 198 Sands Street, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, in May 1875. Charles and his brother William worked in The City as painters in 1875.28,5 Charles A. Waldron lived at 198 Sands Street, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, fr 1875 - 1877.26,29
On May 5, 1875 Charles Waldron testified before a Congressional committee regarding fraud he had observed involving the Naval yards at Norfolk and Brooklyn. In his testimony he indicated that he had been at the Norfolk Navy Yard some time in the 1855 to 1856 time period, and that he had observed some timber that had been condemned there in 1855-56 being returned to the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1874.
He testified that he left employment at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on December 2nd 1874 over a pay dispute.30 He resided with Charles A. Waldron Jr. at 198 Sands Street, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, in 1877.31 Charles A. Waldron and Sarah Jane Miller lived at 194 Hudson Avenue, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, in 1880.32 On 16 Jun 1891 Charles was admitted to the N ew York City Alms House on Blackwells Island. The 1891 Alms House census indicates he was born in "Chervally". This possibly refers to the town of Cherry Valley, in Otsego County.33

Based on the results of a 111 marker DNA test Charles descends from Resolved Waldron or his brother Joseph, who arrived in New Netherland about 1654.34
