The Waldron Family of New York
And the Ancestors of his Wife Sarah Jane Miller

Introduction

The information in this genealogy has been collected from a large variety of sources. The Endnotes section of this report provides detailed citations for every source that was consulted.

This genealogy report uses a family numbering system similar to that used by the New England Historic Genealogical Society Register. It is organized like a descendant chart, such that each generation is presented before the next generation is shown.

Each person has a narrative that provides a history of his/her life. If the person had children, the name is preceded by an Arabic number, starting with 1 for the oldest ancestor. A superscript number following the first name indicates his/her generation number. Superscript numbers at the end of sentences refer to the citations shown in the Endnotes section.

The children in a family are then listed with small Roman numerals, followed by their birth, marriage and death information (if known). An Arabic number preceding the Roman numeral indicates that person had children that are listed in a more detailed discussion that can be found in a narrative labeled with that Arabic number. (see Ethel and Edna in the example below). For example, Ethel Waldron, below, has number 14. Thus more discussion of Ethel Waldron can be found elsewhere in the report at the number 13.

     4. JOHN G.2 WALDRON (Charles1) was born in Nov 1860 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.113,114,115,116,117 He married Caroline Spink on 31 Jul 1885 in New York City, New York.118,119 He died before 1920.120
      .
.
.
Children of John G.2 Waldron and Caroline Spink both born in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, were as follows:
          13.     i.     ETHEL3 was born in Jun 1885. She married Dr. Lucius Mason Bush on 13 Dec 1911 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.
          14.     ii.     EDNA E. was born on 3 Feb 1888. She married Edwin H. Spence on 23 Nov 1909 at 207 Washington Park, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. She died in Aug 1963 at age 75.

The superscript italic number immediately following a person's given name (e.g., John G.2 ) indicates his generation from person number 1, Charles A. Waldron. Following the person's name is his or her father's first name and his generation number, enclosed in parentheses. (John G. Waldron's father is Charles.) Superscripts following other information are references to the footnotes at the end of the report that provide citations to the sources of the information.

This report includes a narrative of the lives of the descendants of Charles Waldron and Sarah Jane Miller, and also the Descendants of the Daniell Family (Elizabeth Daniell married William H. Waldron). At the end of this report are also included two charts:
     1)     A chart of the descendants of Charles A. Waldron and Sarah Jane Miller.
     2)     A chart of the ancestors of Sarah Jane Miller, on her mother's side.

This volume, of necessity, must be considered a work in progress, as not all of the information contained herein has been fully researched. If the reader would like to offer corrections or additions to any of the information, the complier would be pleased to receive them.

He lived at 246 West Street, New York City, New York County, New York, (Occupation ice) in 1847.13 He and Sarah Jane Miller lived in the 8th Ward, District 1, New York City, New York County, New York, in 1850. His family lived right next door to the Joseph Daniell family.14

In 1850 Charles and his family lived in the same building as Sarah's mother, Nancy Miller and her son Joseph Miller and his family.15 The 1850 census listed his occupation as ice dealer. This coincides with the New York City Directories for 1847 through 1852. (He doesn't appear in the directories prior to 1847.) The 1860 census listed his occupation as "Pump & Block", while the New York City directories of 1860 and 1861 list his occupation as pumpmaker and "blocks", respectively. The 1870 census listed his occupation as truck driver, and in 1880 the census listed his occupation as blockmaker. He is again listed as a blockmaker in the Brooklyn City Directories from 1871 through 1882. The occupation of "pump and block" is associated with the sailing industry. He was involved in making wooden bilge pumps and the block & tackle used in sailing ships.15,16

When George F. Daniell was sworn in as a citizen on 28 Aug 1850 at the Common Pleas Court, New York City, New York, Charles was a witness for him.17 He and Sarah Jane Miller lived in the 11th Ward, 4th District, New York City, New York County, New York, in 1855. His occupation was "pumps and blocks."18 Charles A. Waldron and Sarah Jane Miller lived in the 19th Ward, District 1, New York City, New York, in 1860. His occupation was listed as Pump & Block, and his personal property was valued at $400.19 Charles A. Waldron lived at 6 Beekman Street, New York City, New York, in the 2nd Ward, 4th Congressional District in 1863.20 He was employed in 1863 at the Navy Yard, New York City, New York.21 He and Sarah Jane Miller lived in Ward 13 District 5, New York City, New York County, New York, in 1870. He worked as a truck driver, and his personal property was valued at $200.
The 1870 census indicates that Charles' father and mother were both foreign born. This appears to be an error. The 1880 census indicates that both his father and his mother were born in NY.22 Charles A. Waldron lived at 202 Prospect Street, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, fr 1871 - 1873.23 He and Joseph D. Waldron lived at 202 Prospect Street, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, in 1873.24 Charles resided with one of his children, Charles A. Waldron Jr. and Sarah Jane Miller, at 198 Sands Street, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, in May 1875. By June his family was living next door at 200 Sands Street.25,5 Charles A. Waldron lived at 198 Sands Street, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, fr 1875 - 1877.23 He and Sarah Jane Miller lived at 194 Hudson Avenue, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, in 1880.26

Based on the results of a 37 marker DNA test Charles descends from Resolved Waldron or his brother Joseph, who arrived in New Netherland about 1654.27
