Rev. John Lothrop was baptized on 20 Dec 1584 in Etton, Yorkshire, England.3,4,5 He was the son of Thomas Lothrop.6 Rev. John Lothrop married Hannah Howes on 10 Oct 1610 at Eastwell, Kent, England.4 Rev. John Lothrop married Anna (?) a 1634.7
Rev. John Lothrop died on 8 Nov 1653 at Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, at age 68.8
In April 1632 Mr. Lothropp and forty one of his parishioners were arrested and imprisoned in the old Clink prison, in Newgate, and in the Gatehouse. In the spring of 1634, all but Mr. Lothropp were released on bail. He, being their leader was deemed too dangerous to release. During his imprisonment his wife fell sick and died.9 John was released and immigrated to Boston|On Sept. 27, 1634 he removed to Scituate in 1634 on the Griffin.10,11 He was the Pastor at Barnstable.12,13,5
The house constructed in 1644 for the Reverend John Lothrop forms the original part of the Sturgis Library, and is the oldest Library building in the United States. The building is also one of the oldest houses remaining on Cape Cod. Since Reverend Lothrop used the front room of the house for public worship, another distinction is that it is the oldest structure still standing in America where religious services were regularly held.14
He made a will on 10 Aug 1653 at Barnstable, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.
The will provided:
To his wife, the house he then lived in. To his eldest son Thomas, the house formerly occupied by him in Barnstable. To son Benjamin. To son John who is in Engd. To daughters Jane and Barbara. He requests his children to take in order of their ages such of his books as they may wish, and the rest he orders to "bee sold to any honest man whoe can tell how to make use of them."
