John Goodwin was born in 1647.3,2 He married Martha Lathrop, daughter of Benjamin Lathrop and Martha (?), on 2 Dec 1669 at Charlestown, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.4,5,1,2 John Goodwin died on 21 Jun 1712.6,7,8 He was buried at Copp's Hill, Massachusetts, The gravestone reads:
Here lyes buried / the Body of JOHN GOODWIN / Aged 65 years / departed this life June ye 1st 1712.6
He removed to Boston, where four of his children in 1688, being possessed with a spirit of childish mischief, sadly perplexed and befooled Cotton Mather, so as to cause Mrs. Glover, the washerwoman, to be convicted of a deal with the devil, and hanged, as in his Magnalia [396—403] is told. By these infant instructors the learned author was adequately prepared for the honors he gained in the doleful tragedies of 1692, enacted at Salem.9 Upon John's death, his estate was administered by Martha Goodwin on 28 Jul 1714.10

However, their marriage intentions were not published until 26 Nov 1774, according to Plymouth vital records.
