Isaac Hill

M, #833, b. 1 January 1796, d. 22 February 1830
Last Edited=19 February 2010
Isaac Hill was born on 1 Jan 1796 at Mason, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire.1,2 He was the son of Samuel Hill and Dorcas Wyeth. He married Lucinda Cutter, daughter of John Cutter and Miriam Butler, on 6 Jan 1822 at West Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.3 Isaac Hill died on 22 Feb 1830 at Dracut, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, at age 34.2,4 He was interred at Oakland Cemetery, on Mamoth Road, Dracut, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.2
Isaac was a wood worker, carpenter, and builder, and lived and worked in Cambridge until about 1829 when he became sick with tuberculosis, and moved to Dracut.

The Hill House.
The Hill family asserted that Josiah Fox, Sr. Built the Hill House. The exact date when it was built is not known, but the Hill family has said that when the house was purchased by Isaac Hill from Josiah Fox in 1829, that the interior woodwork and moldings were not finished, and that they were completed by Isaac Hill.

It was thought possible that Josiah Fox may have started the house for his son Josiah, Jr., then later found the son did not need it. Josiah Fox Sr. died 8 May 1830, aged 75. His grave is in the Oakland Cemetery, Collinsville (now part of Dracut).

Isaac Hill bought the house and land on Mammoth Road, in Dracut, from Josiah Fox in 1829 and moved to Dracut after the birth of their son, Isaac, Jr. Isaac was at the time suffering from terminal tuberculosis. The Hill family has said that he purchased the house and farm in order that his wife might have a permanent home and means of livelihood near her family, the Cutters of Pelham, New Hampshire. It is said that Isaac, a carpenter, finished the interior of the house before his death in 1830.

Lucinda's brother, John Cutter, came to live in the house to manage the farm for his sister. It seems probable that this may have been a part of the plan of Isaac Hill, and that he had the help of his brother-in-law in finishing the house.5,6 He left a will on 12 Feb 1830 at Dracut, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.7

Lucinda Cutter was born on 31 Jan 1798 at Pelham, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire.1,2,3 She was the daughter of John Cutter and Miriam Butler. She married Isaac Hill on 6 Jan 1822 at West Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.4 Lucinda Cutter died on 28 Dec 1882 at Dracut, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, at age 84.5 She was interred at Oakland Cemetery, on Mamoth Road, Dracut, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.5
The Hill house on Mammoth Road was a double house. Lucinda and Isaac lived on one side, and her brother John Pierce Cutter and his family lived on the side toward Pelham. Their parents, John and Miriam Cutter lived just up the road, in Pelham, New Hampshire.6 As of 6 Jan 1822,her married name was Hill. When Isaac Hill died, John Cutter came to live in the Dracut house and manage the farm. He had somehow gotten his sister Lucinda to sign papers giving him all of her property. She toook him to court and won her property back. She evicted him from the house, and thereafter just hired a manager for her farm. This resulted in a rift between the Hill and Cutter family for three generations.7 She lived in Dracut, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, in 1850.8 She resided with Isaac Hill Jr and Eliza Ann Peabody in Dracut, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, in 1860.9
