     WALLINGFORD - Walter Elias, 89, of Ashlar Village, Wallingford, passed away Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford, after a brief illness.

Walter was born on Jan. 30, 1920 in Vienna, Austria to Leo and Stephanie Elias. He was the youngest of three children, including brothers, Wilhelm and Albert. His childhood was spent in Sussenbrun (a Vienna suburb) and Vienna, where he attended the Grafiche Lehr Vazuchs Ansalt to study photography, graduating in 1938. That same year, he left Austria and arrived in Switzerland after crossing the German/Swiss border on foot. After approximately one year spent as a refugee in a Swiss internment camp, he immigrated to the U.S. and settled in NYC, N.Y. Walter established Waro Custom Labs on Fifth Ave. with his first wife, Rosa, where he developed photographs for some of America's best known professional photographers. After many years in New York, Walter retired to Heritage Village in Southbury, and then moved to Ashlar Village in Wallingford, five years ago with his wife, Audrey. Walter will always be remembered by his family and friends for his gentleness and wit, as well as his love of stimulating conversation, playing cards, and the music of Mozart.

Walter is survived by his wife, Audrey, and her children,
David Smith and his wife, Jane Smith, of Wallingford, Barbara Smith and her husband, Peter Boody, of Northampton, Mass., Sarah Smith, of Little Rock, Ark., and Ira Smith and his wife, Maureen Smith of Sharon. Walter is also survived by his three grandchildren, Megan Smith, Sarah Smith and Rebecca Smith of Wallingford; and his niece, Evelyn Kalbeck; and nephews, Robert John Kalbeck and Thomas Scott Kalbeck of Bedford, NY. Walter was predeceased by his first wife, Rosa; and brothers, Wilhelm and Albert.

The date of a memorial service to be held at Ashlar Village will be announced. The family would like to thank all of the friends at Ashlar Village who have provided their love and support during the past few months. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Walter's memory be made to the Masonicare Charity Foundation.      Walter immigrated to New York on 30 Mar 1939 on the Normandie, which departed Le Havre, France on 25 Mar 1939.10 He and Audrey A. Wubbenhorst lived at 692b Heritage Condo 17, at Southbury, New Haven County, Connecticut, in 1996.11
