He married Martha Prout on April 6, 1844 in the Church of England Church of St. Paternus in South Petherwin, Cornwall. The marriage certificate shows the following:

Married in the Parish Church according to the rites and ceremonies of the Established Church after banns by me, Robert Stephen Stevens. This marriage was solemnized between us, William Wooldridge + his mark, Martha Prout + her mark in the presence of us, Elizabeth Hawk, Thomas Worden + her mark."

William and Martha had nine children. A review of their birth certificates indicates the following. The family name appears as "Wooldridge" on the certificates of William 2nd, and Elizabeth, but as "Woolridge" on the others. The family lived in South Petherwin from 1844 to 1850 and in Lewannick from 1850 to 1880. South Petherwin is two miles south of Lewannick, five miles southeast of Launceston. The occupation of William was given as "agricultural labourer" from 1845 to 1856, "pedler" from 1860 to 1866 and as "handler" in 1878. Martha's maiden name appears as "Scown" on the birth certificate of William 2nd and as "Prout" on all the others. The only residence that can be identified now is the one at Higher Trevell where John, James, Emma, and Thomas were born and where the family lived from 1854 to 1880. Higher Trevell is a group of houses on Route A30 about 0.6 miles west of Lewannick village. The group is identified by "Higher Trevell" on Ordnance Survey Map 28/38. Stanley Wooldridge identified the Wooldridge home as the house closest to the highway. Originally it was a two story house with gray stone masonry walls and gray slate roof. By 1969 the walls had been stuccoed and the roof replaced with corrugated roofing. According to Stanley the house where Jane was born, Ridley Park, was located about 500 yards east of Higher Trevell and no longer existed in 1969.

After moving to Lewannick the family attended the Bible Christian Ebenezer Chapel built in 1841 in the Tinneyhall section of Lewannick and still standing. The Bible Christian Society was founded in 1815 in Devon by an expelled Methodist minister , a Cornishman, and a dissatisfied Anglican. In 1907 it joined two other groups to form the United Methodist Church. The latter church subsequently joined the Wesleyan Methodist Church. The following was obtained from the census records, Public Records Office, Land Registry Building, Portugal Street, London. The date of the census was April 7, 1861. Residing at Higher Trevell were the following:

Name      Relation Age      Occupation               Where born
William Wooldridge      Head     45          Hawker & peddler     Lewannick
Martha                    Wife     38                                   St. Stephens
William      Son          13          Tailor ap               South Petherwin
Elizabeth               Daur     11          School                    do
Jane do          8          do                         Lewannick
John Son          6          do                         do
Mark Son          4                                   do
James Son          7 mos                              do

In 1880 William and Martha emigrated to Wakefield, Massachusetts to be with their son William 2nd who had lost his wife. Of their nine children John died in infancy, Jane emigrated to Australia and James, after living in the United States, returned to Cornwall. The other six children emigrated to the United States, William being the first in 1879 and Elizabeth being the last in 1898. The death certificates in Wakefield record William's mother's name as "Margaret", Martha's birthplace as "Egloskerry", Martha's father's name as "Scown" and her mother's name as "Prout". While Martha's maiden name is recorded as "Scown" on the birth certificate of William, it is recorded as "Prout" on her marriage certificate and on the birth certificates of the other eight children. It is possible that William, based on his own birth certificate, was responsible for "Scown" being used on Martha's death certificate and on her gravestone. The Church of England baptismal records for Cornwall are kept in the County Record Office, Truro , Cornwall. The Lewannick register gives William's baptismal date as June 5, 1814, his mother's name as Margaret Wooldridge (sic) and did not give his father's name. There is no record of Martha Prout or Martha Scown in the baptismal registers for Egloskerry from 1813 to 1826, for St. Stephens by Launceston from 1813 to 1830 and for South Petherwin from 1817 to 1830.26 He lived with his daughter Elizabeth until 1901.27 He lived at 213 Albion Street, Wakefield, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, on 7 Jun 1900.28
