Luth. Church, Süderau, Steinburg, Duchy of Holstein. Fafather Franz was long established in Kiebitzreihe. Mother Lena was from Süderau. Baptiamal sponsors were Peter Peve, Claus Schmedtje and Johann Janssen, all from Kiebitzreihe.4 He married Johanna Maria Catharina Dorothea Buls, daughter of Friederich Daniiel Buls and Anna Maria Dorothea Rabe, b 1855.3,13,14 Henry Both died on 21 Sep 1879 at 450 Grand Street, New York City, New York, at age 55.2,15,11 He was interred on 23 Sep 1879 at Lutheran (now 'All Faiths') Cemetery, Middle Village, Queens County, New York, Lot 11439, Map 3A.11

The passenger ship list indicates the ship came from Hamburg with 71 passengers, and that H. Both was a 25 year old cigar maker from Altona, and his destination was New York.1
He emigrated to the U.S. in April of 1849, just prior to the end of the German Revolution of 1848, which ended in failure in June 1849.20,21.1,22 He lived in New York City, New York County, New York, (Ward 8) in 1850. He shared a flat with a young couple and two other single men, who were all also cigar makers.3 He and Johanna Maria Catharina Dorothea Buls lived at 10th Ward, at New York City, New York County, New York, in 1855.13 Henry Both was naturalized on 16 Feb 1856 at New York City, New York County, New York.23 He lived at 143 Orchard Street, New York City, New York County, New York, in 1857.24 He and Johanna Maria Catharina Dorothea Buls lived at 114 Norfolk Street, New York City, New York County, New York, (13th Ward) bt 1860 - 1865. Note that their son Albert's name was given as Henry on the 1860 census.14,25 When Jacob Both was sworn in as a citizen on 28 Aug 1860 at Common Pleas Court, New York County, New York, Henry was a witness for an unknown person .26
In 1865 Henry Both applied for a U.S. passport. On his application he indicated that:
1) he was a naturalized citizen,
2) he was born 3 June 1824 in Suderan, Duchy of Holstein, Germany,
3) that he intended to take with him his wife, Maria Dorothea, age 46, and children, Elizabeth Caroline Both age 7, and Albert William Both, age 5.27
Henry Both and Johanna Maria Catharina Dorothea Buls lived at 450 Grand Street, New York City, New York, from at least 1868 to 1879.28,29,17 U. S. Census records from 1850 to 1870 indicate that Henry Both was a cigar maker. New York City Directories also show his occupation as "segars" from 1862 through his death in 1879. He must have been quite successful, as the census records show the value of his personal estate growing from $800 in 1860 to $5,000 in 1870. They became Henry A. Lambert's godparents at his baptism on 20 Jan 1878 at Madison St German Presbyterian Church, New York City, New York County, New York.30

She married John Eaton Scott on 18 Jun 1945 at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, Lowell, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. The reception was held at the home of Rowena's parents in Dracut.2,3 Rowena Maud Hill died on 22 Jan 2019 at Kings Park, Suffolk County, New York, at age 98.4 She was buried on 4 May 2019 at Fairview Cemetery, Coatesville, Chester County, Pennsylvania, Lot 416 SE.4

In December 1949 John was transferred to Linz, Austria. Rowena, Betty and Johnny left from Staten Island on the U.S. Army Transport George W. Goethals. They all had to stay at Fort Hamilton for three days prior to leaving. The trip took eight days as they stopped in Southampton, England, then steamed through the English Channel and arrived in Bremerhaven, Germany. From there they took a train to Linz.14,15
On 23 Dec 1952 Rowena gave birth to her second son, Roland Hill Scott in the military hospital in München (Munich), Bayern, Germany.16 Rowena Maud Hill arrived on 3 Aug 1953 at New York City, New York, from Leghorn (Livorno), Italy on the the USNS Geiger. She and Betty, John and Roland left Italy on July 23 1953. On arrival they went to Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn in New York. John was then assigned to Fort Myer, in Virginia from 1953 until 1956.17,16
John was again assigned overseas in 1956. In December the family left from Fort Hamilton by ship, and arrived in Panama, where they live for the next three and a half years. The return trip from Panama in June of 1960 was by airplane, arriving in Charleston, South Carolina during a fierce thunderstorm. They stayed in Charleston overnight before being reunited with their 1952 Chevy which had been shipped a week earlier.14

In Rebecca Agnew Sample's will on 3 Apr 1932 at Coatesville, Chester County, Pennsylvania, John was named as an heir. Her will provided a one third share of her residual estate to the Presbyterian Church of Coatesville, the remaining two thirds went to John Scott.12 John also inherited property in Stottsville, Pennsylvania from his Aunt Rebecca Scott. The property was at the intersection of Pomeroy Road and Strasburg Road and contained what had been the Stottsville Tavern & Inn, which Rebecca's husband, John E. Scott had obtained from several individuals: Thomas A. Mann, R. H. Hope, Joseph W. Stott and Rachel J. Stott. It had been operated as a tavern in the 1830s, and then as a store operated by James Russel from about 1870, and as the Pomeroy Post Office. John E. Scott operated the store from about 1880 until the turn of the century. He was the last postmaster and businessman to occupy the building. The Inn was destroyed by fire on 08 March 1939. John sold the property in 1946 for $850.00.13

This was followed by an assignment at Fort Amador, Canal Zone (Panama) until June 1960. After Panama he was transferred to Fort Dix, New Jersey. This assignment lasted until May 1962, when he was sent to Korea.
