Elizabeth Wooldridge was born on 6 Mar 1850 at Congdonford, South Petherwin, Cornwall, England.1,2,3,4,5,6 She was the daughter of William Wooldridge and Martha Prout.7 Elizabeth Wooldridge was baptized on 27 Mar 1850 at Launceston, Cornwall, England.7 She married Joseph Howell Pearce on 3 Apr 1878 at Launceston, Cornwall.8,9 Elizabeth Wooldridge filed for divorce from an unknown person on 21 Mar 1898 at The High Court of Justice, Divorce Division, Exeter, Devon, England. She died on 7 Sep 1906 at Wakefield, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, at age 56.10 She was buried on 10 Sep 1906 at Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.11
John, William and Elizabeth, William Wooldridge and Martha Prout's children, resided with William and Martha, at Lewannick, Cornwall, England, in 1851.12 South Petherwin is the parish situated between the Borough of Launceston and the parish of Lewannick. Stanley Wooldridge was unable to locate Congdonford and thought the birthplace might have been Congdon Shop or Trecongdon. Elizabeth lived, after her marriage, in St. Cleer and Callington, Cornwall and in Exeter, Devon. In Exeter the family lived on Longbrook Street; the girls went to St. Sidwell's School (still used in 1969); the family attended St. Sidwell's Church of England (replaced after the last war) and, on occasion, Exeter Cathedral. The girls played in nearby Northerhay Park. Elizabeth was the last of the Wooldridge family to leave England and, in 1898, the family immigrated to Wakefield, Massachusetts. When James Wooldridge returned to England about 1900 he sent Elizabeth three photographs. These are listed below with notations on backs of each shown in quotation marks. 1. "Lewannick Village". View of the main street looking north from point opposite Church of England showing two story masonry buildings. 2. "Tinneyhall Church". This Methodist chapel appears the same today. Stone wall reads "Bible Christian Ebenezer Chapel 1841". 3. "Old Homestead Higher Trevell". This is a view from the road of south end of two story house with gray stone masonry walls and gray slate roof. "Higher Trevell" is indicated on 2½-inch Ordnance Survey Map SX 28/38 as settlement on Route A30 about 0.6 miles west of Lewannick Village. The house nearest to and at right angles to the road was identified by Stanley Wooldridge as the old homestead. In 1969 the masonry walls were covered with cement stucco and the slate roof replaced with green corrugated roofing. The one story shed attached to south end of house appeared to be of original construction. Elizabeth lived in this house from 1854 until her marriage in 1878.13 Elizabeth Wooldridge resided with William Wooldridge and Martha Prout in Lewannick, Cornwall, in 1861.14 Elizabeth, Jane, James, Emma and Thomas, William Wooldridge and Martha Prout's child, resided with William and Martha, at Alternon, Lewannick, Cornwall, England, in 1871.15,16 As of 3 Apr 1878,her married name was Pearce. Elizabeth Wooldridge and Joseph Howell Pearce lived at Dobwalls, Liskeard, Cornwall, England, in 1881.17 Elizabeth Wooldridge lived at Launceston Road, Callington, Cornwall, England, in 1891.18 Joseph came before Grand Jury, accused of a criminal assualt on his daughter Rosina, age 14. According to the article, Rosina had initially leveled the charge but later recanted it.
The testimony included the allegation that Elizabeth Pearce, on January 19th, had taken the three older daughters to the "Pantomime" while leaving the three youngest daughters home with their father, Joseph Pearce. It was at this time that he allegedly attacked Rosina. The complaint was filed on March 5th.
Since Rosina recanted the complaint the grand jury returned "No bill" against the most serious of the charges, but found a "True bill" on a less grave count.19 She and Joseph Howell Pearce emigrated in Aug 1898 from Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.20,21,22,23,24,25 After Joseph went back to England around 1900, Elizabeth rented rooms to boarders to help pay expenses. She had purchased the house in Wakefield.26 Elizabeth Wooldridge and Joseph Howell Pearce lived at 10 Franklin Street, Wakefield, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, in 1900.27 Elizabeth Wooldridge lived at 40 Gould Street, Wakefield, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, in 1902.28

I was very sorry to learn of Mrs. Petersen's passing. I spent a lot of time in my teen years in her kitchen on Courcelette talking about politics. She was always welcoming, well-informed and funny. She was a great motivator for aspiring political scientists like me. It occurs to me that I am the same age now as she was at the time. I hope I can act as positive role model for my students the way she did for me. My condolences to the family.

My condolences to Hans and Pat's sons. Pat was my instructor for urban politics at the University of Toronto. She inspired my interest in urban issues and politics, an area that is a focus of my research. RIP, Pat.

Years ago Vicky Casey introduced me to Pat and Hans and it was always a happy time to run into them on their walks in the Beach. I will remember Pat as a bright light - witty, eager, and ready for adventure. Condolences to all her family.

Pat was an institution on our street and she knew everyone. As neighbours we became friends and attended the same coffee group (FIKA) of which she was a founding member. We will miss her bright inquisitive mind, interesting discussions and her laugh. Our condolences to Hans and his family.
